South Korean authorities arrested an officer from the Incheon Police Station suspected of disclosing confidential details from the drug investigation into the late actor Lee Sun Kyun.
On the morning of March 21, the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Gyeonggi Southern Police Agency apprehended a senior officer at the Incheon Police Station. The arrest was made in connection with a suspected leak of confidential information.
The officer was assigned to a department outside the drug crime investigation unit and is under suspicion of disclosing a report containing sensitive information on the progress of Lee’s drug investigation.
Coinciding with the officer’s arrest, authorities executed a second search warrant at the Incheon Police Station, targeting his department and other areas.
Police plan to move the officer to the Gyeonggi Southern Police Agency for further investigation into the leak and to analyze the seized evidence. While details remain confidential, a police official confirmed they’ll look into the leak and analyze the seized items.
News of Lee’s drug use allegations first broke in the media on October 19, 2023, though he was officially charged as a suspect five days earlier, on October 14.
Lee faced three rounds of police questioning over the following two months. The investigation took a tragic turn when he was found dead in a park in Seoul’s Jongno-gu district just three days after his final questioning on December 27, 2023.
The situation became even more controversial when it was revealed that Lee had requested a private investigation to clear his name before his death, but this request was denied.
Members of the cultural and arts community have voiced their strong support for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the information leak related to his case.
