Chinese actress Li Qin’s identity is at the center of a controversy after her photo was mistakenly used as a memorial picture in a drama she wasn’t even part of.
A web drama airing on March 20 sparked controversy after featuring actress Li Qin’s unauthorized ID photo in a memorial scene. The drama included several scenes with memorial photos, and Li Qin’s image was used and edited in black and white.
Li Qin’s agency fired back after her ID photo was used in a web drama without permission. According to the agency, the director never sought consent to use Li Qin’s image and did so disrespectfully. They demanded the scene’s removal and stated they would pursue legal action if it were not rectified.
Later that day, the web drama’s director issued a clarification. They claimed the controversial photo was an AI-generated composite image, not Li Qin’s ID photo. The director emphasized they “did not engage in such a careless act,” and the production team was unaware the AI-generated image resembled Li Qin so closely. The episode was promptly removed from the web drama within an hour of the explanation.
Li Qin is a highly recognized actor who is loved by the Chinese public. She is well-known for her roles in The Song of Glory, The Wolf, Snowy Night, and others.
