Japanese Star Sympathizes With Shohei Ohtani’s Interpreter’s Gambling Addiction

Jun Hori’s Social Media

Former NHK announcer and media personality Jun Hori is drawing attention for his candid remarks about Ippei Mizuhara.

On March 23, Hori appeared on Yomiuri TV’s “Asapara S” and expressed sympathy for Mizuhara, the interpreter for Shohei Ohtani of the LA Dodgers, who was fired over illegal gambling allegations.

Hori commended a major U.S. sports media outlet for meticulously verifying and reporting the incident. He expressed his admiration, stating that it exemplified “good American journalism.”

He continued, “While Mizuhara’s actions might be concerning if they stem from an uncontrollable impulse, he deserves proper treatment and support.” Hori then acknowledged the wider issue, stating, “Many people are battling gambling addiction. It’s not about blame, but a call to seek help. I can relate,” he admitted, “because I’ve gambled myself.”

His point is that instead of condemning him as a criminal, we should see him as a person in pain.

When asked what kind of gambling he had done, Hori said, “I’ve done everything. I’ve even played Pachinko. I poured in money like water. It was difficult.” He revealed that it had a major impact on his personal life. He said his friends supported him during that time and hoped many people would encourage Mizuhara.

Ippei Mizuhara is currently facing allegations of falsifying his career and academic background.
