Yuichiro Umehara, the Japanese voice actor who has captivated female fans with his charming voice and good looks, was recently revealed to be married. He tied the knot with a college classmate several years ago.
The foreign media outlet Livedoor reported on April 4 that Umehara was spotted enjoying a date with a woman in the bustling area of Shibuya, Japan.
Many fans were surprised to learn that the woman was Umehara’s wife.
Given his popularity and image as the “perfect boyfriend,” fans were shocked to learn he married a few years ago.
Recently, Umehara’s wife opened a pop-up store in Tokyo. On the opening day, she spent about 30 minutes chatting with visitors before heading to a café where her husband, Umehara, was waiting.
Umehara’s smile as his wife discussed her pop-up store hinted at a harmonious relationship. After a few minutes, the couple took a short walk to a nearby high-end sushi restaurant, where they savored a meal for about an hour.
Reporters ambushed Umehara as he exited the restaurant, asking about his marital status. Initially caught off guard, he swiftly regained his composure and confirmed, “Yes, it’s true. I married my college sweetheart around the age of 26. We dated for a long time before tying the knot.”
When asked why he did not announce his marriage, Umehara explained, “There were various issues with the agency at the time, and there were not as many voice actors announcing their marriages then, so it was difficult to disclose. I also thought that work and personal life are separate, so I had no intention of announcing it at all.”
Umehara apologized to fans for not personally revealing his marriage and only letting them find out through the article. He stated that his marriage is very personal and pledged to continue showing his unwavering dedication as a voice actor.
Umehara debuted in 2013 and quickly rose to fame after voicing the character Yufuin En in the 2015 animation “Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE!”. His sweet voice and visuals, comparable to an actor’s, earned him the affectionate nickname “Umehara-chan” from fans.
An industry source speculated that Umehara’s marriage might affect his fanbase, particularly those who develop a parasocial connection with him. This could explain why his marriage wasn’t publicly announced.
