Squid Game
Joker: Folie à Deux

In the latter half of 2024, well-crafted productions that made us laugh and cry are returning.

This upcoming season, highly anticipated films and series are gearing up for release and are ready to impact the streaming media industry worldwide.

Netflix’s original series Squid Game garnered global acclaim in 2021 and is preparing to reconnect with its audience. The series follows 456 participants invited to a mysterious death game with a prize of 45.6 billion won (approximately $38 million). Season 2, confirmed in 2023, is scheduled to premiere this December.

In an interview, South Korean actor Wi Ha Joon, known for his role in Season 1 of Squid Game, recently expressed excitement for Season 2. He said, “When I read the script, I found many new characters appealing.” Season 2 boasts a star-studded cast, including Lee Jung Jae, Im Si Wan, Kang Ha Neul, Lee Jin Wook, Gong Yoo, and Park Sung Hoon, attracting significant attention.

The iconic arch nemesis of Batman, the Joker, is returning in the upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux, scheduled to premiere in North American theaters in October. The film released its second official trailer on the 23rd. In an interview, Zazie Beetz, portraying Sophie Dumond, discussed how the narrative diverges from the original Joker movie and traditional musical films.

The announcement of Lady Gaga joining the cast has further heightened anticipation. She will portray Harley Quinn, the Joker’s love interest and antagonist, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, an Academy Award winner for Best Actor.

Gyeongseong Creature
Pachinko

Last winter, the Netflix series Gyeongseong Creature gained international attention by ranking in the TOP 10 across 69 countries worldwide. This fall, Season 2 is set to premiere. Season 1 unfolded against the ominous backdrop of spring 1945, portraying the struggle of two youths against a monstrous embodiment of greed. In Season 2, the narrative shifts to modern-day Seoul, Korea. Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee are returning to the cast, joined by Lee Mu Saeng from The Glory and Maestra.

Apple TV+ debuted the trailer for Pachinko Season 2 on Tuesday. This series opens with a poignant tale of forbidden love and traverses diverse cultures across South Korea, Japan, and the United States. It delves into themes of war and peace, love and separation, victory and judgment. Adapted from a New York Times best-selling novel, Pachinko has earned global acclaim for its compelling narrative and the stellar performances of its cast, including Kim Min Ha. The trailer’s release has intensified anticipation for Season 2, highlighted by including the soundtrack “Viva La Vida,” performed by BLACKPINK’s Rosé.

Meanwhile, it’s noteworthy that many highly anticipated titles will soon debut on online streaming services. Season-based productions on these platforms reported relatively underwhelming performance in the year’s first half. As these services launch new seasons, industry observers closely monitor whether they can rebound in the latter half of the year.
