A persistent online commenter who has repeatedly defamed the popular K-pop group BTS is set to face legal repercussions. On Monday, Big Hit Music, BTS’s agency, announced through a fan account that they are “pursuing regular legal action against individuals who post malicious content involving defamation, insults, sexual harassment, the spread of false information, and slander against BTS.”
The agency stated, “We have gathered substantial evidence of various malicious posts from platforms, including Ilgan Best, DC Inside, Theqoo, FM Korea, and Instiz, using both fan reports and our own monitoring efforts. Complaints have been submitted to law enforcement agencies.”
Furthermore, Big Hit Music confirmed that “the first trial for the defamation lawsuit and other illegal activities filed against the Youtube channel Sojang has taken place, with subsequent proceedings ongoing. We are actively cooperating with law enforcement and relevant government bodies to ensure that those who illegally obtained and leaked the artists’ personal information are held accountable.”
They added, “The suspects who were referred to the authorities for charges of insult and defamation in the previous lawsuit have received confirmed fines.” Some suspects faced maximum penalties after repeatedly posting numerous malicious comments over an extended period. Reports indicate that fines for such offenses can reach up to 2 million won (approximately $1,520).
The agency also mentioned, “We are continuously collecting and reporting malicious posts targeting BTS members who are currently fulfilling their military duties, and legal actions are ongoing. We are strongly and uncompromising against the suspects without any agreements or leniency.”
Meanwhile, the YouTuber known as Sojang is under investigation for spreading false information that has defamed multiple artists, including IVE’s Jang Wonyoung, singer Kang Daniel, and BTS.
