Chef Anh Sung Jae, a judge on Culinary Class Wars, recently participated in a striking photoshoot. The unique magazine Singles, aimed at confident singles, unveiled a stunning visual spread featuring Anh Sung Jae, who has gained significant attention thanks to his role in the Netflix series. The photos highlight his versatility, showcasing a range of styles that exude sophistication.
When asked if he anticipated the popularity of Culinary Class Wars, Anh Sung Jae replied, “I didn’t expect or intend for this kind of buzz from the beginning. However, I felt that a new kind of energy was needed when considering myself, the chefs around me, and the landscape.”
Regarding the importance of intention behind the food, Anh Sung Jae stated, “Everyone likely comes with their signature dishes, and the taste is essential. However, to have a distinguishing factor beyond that, I wanted to understand the intention behind the dishes.”
He added, “Even though I consider myself an expert, it’s a dangerous thought to believe my evaluation is absolute. If I simply taste a dish and declare it good or bad without understanding the chef’s intention, I don’t think that’s giving the chef a fair opportunity. Chefs are the ones who take their imaginative concepts and turn them into a final product, so asking about their intentions feels completely natural to me.” This reflects his deep respect for chefs and their creative processes.
When asked if he had seen the memes featuring him from Culinary Class Wars, Anh Sung Jae responded, “Even if I didn’t want to see them, people kept sending them to me, so I did. What message are they trying to convey?” He expressed skepticism about their intent.
Responding to the editor’s playful comment, “A meme of Chef Sung Jae excited about eliminating Chef Choi Hyun Seok?” Anh Sung Jae clarified, “That’s actually the most unfair part. I didn’t act with that intention at all. My comments were meant to express my genuine affection for the diverse flavors. There was even a photo of me smiling while looking at Chef Choi’s back, which genuinely reflected my admiration for his passion and talent. But then it got misinterpreted like that.”
Meanwhile, Culinary Class Wars is a Netflix original series featuring a cooking competition between 20 star chefs (white spoon) and 80 underdogs (black spoon). The show gained significant popularity, achieving the number one spot in Netflix’s global Top 10 non-English TV category during its first week of release.
