BTS member Jin recently opened up about his unexpected but close friendship with celebrity chef Paik Jong Won, revealing a joyful, family-like relationship between the K-pop star and the renowned culinary expert.
Jin appeared as a guest on the popular YouTube channel Salon Drip 2 on Tuesday, sharing personal stories and insights into his connections with those outside of the K-pop world.
During the episode, host Jang Do Yeon brought up Jin’s friendship with Paik. When she asked how they became friends, Jin explained, “He really feels like family to me. It all started when we filmed an episode of Run BTS together. I brought him some strawberries from my hometown, and he invited me to his house. That’s when I found out he’s really into gaming. Now, we play games together almost every day.”
When asked if Paik spends money on in-game purchases, Jin responded, “For that game, you don’t need to spend money. The thing is, he actually has more time than I do. I’m always amazed. I wonder how much time he has. Because I, too, dedicate all my free time to gaming.”
Jin then shared a humorous anecdote about their gaming rivalry. “Surprisingly, he’s always at a higher level than me,” Jin confessed. “I’ll call him to check, and he’ll say, ‘I’m on set filming.’ He’s always traveling for work, so I don’t know how he manages to game so much. I even jokingly asked him if he hires someone to play for him, but he said that’s not the case.” This revelation had the hosts and audience laughing, as the playful dynamic between the two was clearly evident.
Jin also opened up about his culinary attempts, inspired by Paik Jong Won’s popular cooking show Culinary Class Wars. He shared that he tried making Dongpo pork, saying, “I made eight pieces, but only two turned out edible. Whenever I cook, I always call Paik for advice. He told me to simmer the pork for a long time, but I was worried it would burn or stick to the pot. He assured me it wouldn’t.” Jin then jokingly added, “Honestly, Paik doesn’t know much about cooking,” showcasing the lighthearted banter that defines their friendship.
When Jang Do Yeon expressed concern about airing his teasing comments, Jin quickly clarified the nature of their relationship. “We all respect and trust each other, so it’s all in good fun when we tease,” Jin explained. “He even jokes about my appearance, calling me ugly to my face. I think it’s fine to poke fun at the things we’re proud of. If someone calls me ugly, I just laugh it off. I know it’s all in good humor and not meant to be taken seriously.”
