Hwaeomsa Temple has put forward a challenge in the release of vegetarian food.
According to reports on the 3rd, Jirisan Hwaeomsa Temple, the main temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism’s 19th district, announced the release of a vegan burger.
The Hwaeomsa Temple Vegan Burger does not contain meat. It uses rice as the main ingredient for the bun and a patty made with soy protein, with all the cheese, sauce, and other ingredients made from plant-based materials.
The vegan burger released by the temple is the first in the world.
Hwaeomsa Temple and the vegan burger business, Greenmata, held a business signing ceremony the day before and decided to sell the burgers through their stores and online platforms. They plan to expand to the New York and Southeast Asian markets in the first half of next year.
Chief Monk Deokmun, the head monk of Hwaeomsa Temple, said, “Through Hwaeomsa Temple’s branded vegan burger, I want to share trust and health with the people. I hope it becomes an opportunity to share interest and experience in Buddhism through collaboration with professional companies.”
Woo Eui-soo, the CEO of Greenmata, said, “Hwaeomsa Temple Burger successfully achieved a texture that satisfies not only vegetarians but also general meat burger enthusiasts by utilizing plant-based proteins in collaboration with Altist, a food tech company specializing in plant-based alternative foods.”
It was reported that they are also developing vegan shrimp and chicken burgers.
The Hwaeomsa Temple Burger will be released on October 7th.
Hwaeomsa Temple is located in Masan-myeon, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do. It is the representative temple of the 19th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, with 58 affiliated temples including Cheoneun Temple, Hyangilam Temple, Heungguk Temple (Yeosu), Saseongam Temple, Haedong Yonggungsa Temple (Busan Gijang), Jeonghye Temple (Suncheon), Dorimsa Temple (Gokseong), and Baegunsa Temple (Gwangyang).
In the past, they have also garnered a positive response through various attempts to engage with the public, such as the Hongmaehwa Photo Contest, International Yoga Day Celebration, and Mosquito Net Film Music Concert.
