Detected at Incheon Airport’s Terminal 2 Departure Hall
“No other firearms were found in the bag”
A 70-year-old American was caught carrying live ammunition in his luggage at Incheon Airport.
According to Yonhap News and other sources, on the 18th, the Incheon Airport Police are investigating a 70-year-old American, Mr. A, for violating South Korea’s laws concerning the safe management of firearms, swords, and explosives.
Mr. A is accused of carrying a 9mm bullet for a handgun in his luggage at Incheon Airport’s Terminal 2 Departure Hall around 9 a.m. on the 12th.
He was caught by security personnel while departing the country three days after entering South Korea on the 9th to attend his son’s wedding.
Mr. A told the police he works in the American security industry, stating, “I didn’t realize the bullet was still in my bag.”
A police spokesperson stated, “No other firearms were found in Mr. A’s bag,” adding, “Mr. A has already left the country.” The police plan to investigate further based on Mr. A’s statements.
Previously, in April, another passenger en route from the United States also had a significant amount of ammunition found in their luggage at Incheon Airport.
According to Newsis reports, at that time, a 60-year-old Mongolian man who had flown from Washington, D.C., to Incheon Airport’s Terminal 2 was found to be carrying 100 bullets in his luggage. The ammunition was detected during an X-ray luggage inspection.
The Mongolian man was heading to Ulaanbaatar and explained, “I bought the bullets in Washington, D.C., for target practice in Mongolia, where firearms are permitted.” He questioned the investigators aggressively, asking, “What’s the problem with taking bullets purchased in the U.S. to Mongolia?” Police confiscated the ammunition and allowed the man to leave the country.
