Strikes at US car companies continue. GM announced on September 20, 2023, that it has temporarily halted production at its vehicle assembly plant in Kansas, USA. This is due to the impact of the strike at the adjacent plant in Missouri by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, which has made parts procurement difficult. They also stated that they asked about 2,000 employees to stop coming to work due to the plant shutdown.
UAW union members at GM’s Missouri plant have been on strike since the 15th. The Kansas plant faces difficulties in vehicle assembly as it relies on supplying key components from the striking plant. The Kansas plant produces Chevrolet sedans and has an annual production volume of about 150,000 units, accounting for less than 3% of GM’s global sales volume.
In addition to GM, UAW is also causing strikes at Ford and Stellantis plants, increasingly impacting production. Ford has been demanding work stoppages for about 600 employees as of last week, and Stellantis has taken similar measures for over 300 employees, according to the Detroit News report.
