Tesla’s Chinese-made Model Y
sales surge by 876%
Korean consumers in shock
Tesla, the brand that comes to mind when we think of electric cars.
Recently, they have launched the Chinese-made LFP battery equipped and produced in China, ‘Chinese-made Model Y‘ in the Korean market.
Before the launch, the majority of Korean consumers had a decidedly negative reaction. This was due to the declining trust in China and the escalating anti-China sentiment.
However, there has been a surprising update regarding the Chinese-made Model Y.
Specifically, the sales of Model Y in Korea have skyrocketed at an astounding rate compared to the previous month. This news has sparked mixed reactions among Korean consumers. Today, we will take a look at the recent sales of the Chinese-made Model Y and the reactions of Korean consumers to this news.
Sales surge by 876%
4,206 units sold in September alone
On the 6th, Kaizyu Data Research Institute released the sales data of imported cars for the month of September.
The noticeable part was undoubtedly the sales of Tesla Model Y. Model Y recorded sales of 4,206 units in September alone, ranking first in the total sales of imported cars. This figure is a whopping 876% increase compared to the sales in August, which were 431 units.
The reason Model Y could record such sales is the full-scale delivery of the Chinese-made Model Y.
Currently, Tesla is delivering vehicles equipped with China’s CATL LFP batteries and produced locally in Shanghai to Korean consumers since the end of August. These vehicles are about $17,000 cheaper than the American-made Model Y sold in the U.S., and with government and local subsidies, they can be purchased for around $34,000.
Entering a perfect growth trend
Reactions of shock emerge
Tesla, which recorded a total sales volume of 4,545 units in the domestic market from January to August this year. Industry experts are saying that with the addition of the Chinese-made Model Y, Tesla’s sales have entered a perfect growth trend. What’s interesting is the reaction of Korean consumers.
As mentioned briefly earlier, the majority of Korean consumers had shown a negative reaction to the Chinese-made Model Y.
Many consumers thought the sales of the Chinese-made Model Y would be lower than expected. However, the result has been completely different. Korean consumers are currently showing reactions such as ‘it’s shocking’.
They used to criticize it..
Backlash against mindless criticism
Let’s take a closer look at their reactions. They are reacting with comments like “So many people bought the Chinese-made Model Y?”, “Everyone is out of their minds”, “The world is going crazy!”, “It’s really shocking”, “I can’t believe they’re buying Chinese-made cars”, “I bet we’ll hear a lot about explosions soon”.
On the other hand, there were also those who criticized the unconditionally negative consumers. These people are reacting with comments like “They used to criticize it so much”, “As expected of Koreans, the pot calling the kettle black”, “Everyone’s going crazy trying to buy it because it’s cheap”, “Know the level of Chinese-made products properly before you come”, “Tesla didn’t choose China for no reason”, “Yeah, it’s going to sell well anyway”, “Those who criticize Chinese electric cars always seem to be walking”.
Meanwhile, an industry insider said, “There was a rumor that the number of pre-orders for the Chinese-made Model Y was incredibly high as Korean consumers showed more interest than expected,” and explained, “There are many reactions that they are satisfied with the quality compared to the price among consumers who have received the car, so there is a high possibility that its popularity will continue for a while.”
