A fine of $3,000 was imposed on the male offender.
“The victim suffered significant anxiety and fear… the offense was serious.”
A man who stalked his ex-girlfriend by sending her messages along with over 100 transfers of a single cent to her bank account has been sentenced to a fine.
According to the legal community, on the 28th, Judge Kim Jae Eun of the Seoul Southern District Court recently sentenced Mr. A, charged with violations of the anti-stalking law and attempted home invasion, to a fine of 4 million won (about $3,000).
He also ordered the completion of a 40-hour stalking treatment program.
The court stated, “Considering the specific content, method, and frequency of the crime, the victim must have felt considerable anxiety and fear,” and emphasized, “The nature of the crime is not good, as he continued to stalk even after the provisional injunction decision.”
However, the court also took into consideration the fact that “he confessed to his crime and had no previous criminal record, except for a suspended indictment for another crime.”
After breaking up with his girlfriend, Ms. B, whom he had been dating for about a year, Mr. A was charged with causing anxiety and fear by sending 106 payments of one cent to Ms. B’s account with messages such as “I still love you,” “I wanted to buy you a luxury bag,” and “Contact me, I’ll wait” after receiving a text message from her asking him not to contact her.
He was also accused of trying to enter Ms. B’s house by pressing the door lock number or opening the window in October of the same year.
Despite receiving a provisional injunction from the court prohibiting him from approaching or contacting Ms. B, he is also accused of calling Ms. B and visiting her university to ask for a “one-minute conversation.”
