[iNews24, Reporter Shin Soo-jung] A woman in her 60s who visited a hospital due to an unexplained sound in her ear was faced with a shocking revelation.
On the 29th (local time), the Daily Mail reported the story of a woman in her 60s, referred to as Ms. A, who lives in Taiwan.
According to the Daily Mail, in April, Ms. A was unable to sleep due to strange sounds like ‘clicking’ and ‘rustling’ coming from her left ear, and the sensation of something moving. She visited the Tainan City Hospital, a specialist hospital.
A subsequent examination revealed a small spider crawling in her outer ear canal. The skin inside her ear was also slightly peeled. The doctor removed the spider using a tube-like device.
Dr. Wang Tang-chin, the attending physician, wrote in the ‘New England Journal of Medicine’ about this case, saying, “The spider was very small, about 0.08 to 0.12 inches, so the patient did not feel any pain,” and “I have never seen a spider peeling skin in a human ear before.”
He then advised, “If you have experienced similar symptoms, you should see a doctor.”
Insects found alive in the ear canal are rare, accounting for only 14% of foreign bodies lodged there. Cotton swabs and beads are more commonly found.
