A child who ran barefoot onto a highway has been rescued without injury.
On July 31, a dashcam video taken on a highway near the Daejeon Tollgate on the 4th of the same month was released on the YouTube channel ‘Han Moon-chul TV’.
According to the person who provided the video, identified as Mr. A, he witnessed a child running on the highway while he was returning home from work. The child, who appeared to be between 6 and 7 years old, was barefoot.
The child walked, ran, and even jumped without showing any sign of fear next to the moving cars on the highway. Upon seeing this, Mr. A immediately turned on his emergency lights, followed the child, and reported to 112 (Korean emergency number). After making the report, he stopped his car and ran onto the road to rescue the child.
However, even from the video, it seemed impossible for Mr. A to communicate with the child. The child sat down on the spot and only after Mr. A exerted effort was he able to move the child safely to the grass on the side of the road.
During this process, Mr. A asked the child’s age and name, but the child was unable to communicate, only screaming and writhing. Eventually, Mr. A gave up trying to communicate and held the child for about 8 minutes to prevent any sudden movements until the police arrived.
After handing the child over to the police, Mr. A received a call from the police station after he returned home. Fortunately, a missing child report had already been filed for the child, and the parents had safely picked up the child after receiving the call.
Mr. A explained, “I was so shocked that my hands and feet were trembling. My heart sank when I found the child, who was about the same age as my beloved nephew. On one hand, I felt relieved while I was holding the child.”
Attorney Han Moon-chul asked, “Does the child possibly have a mental disability?” To which Mr. A replied, “I don’t know the exact story, but the police also judged that the child had a disability. It was difficult to have a normal conversation.”
