Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced on the 3rd (local time) that he underwent surgery after rupturing a knee ligament during a mixed martial arts (MMA) practice match.
Zuckerberg posted on Instagram, “I just got out of surgery to replace my torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) that happened during sparring,” along with photos of him lying in a hospital bed with a brace on his left leg.
Zuckerberg added, “I was training for an MMA match early next year, but it will be somewhat delayed.”
Zuckerberg, 39, started MMA during the COVID-19 pandemic and even installed a fighting ring in his backyard.
Since last June, Zuckerberg has been engaged in an online feud with Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, over a potential ‘Hyunpi’ (a slang term meaning a real-life fight) through MMA.
It all started when Musk responded to a netizen’s comment warning him to be careful as “Zuckerberg practices Jiu-Jitsu,” after he posted a sarcastic comment about the launch of Meta’s ‘Twitter rival’ social media thread, saying “I am ready to fight.”
In response, Zuckerberg asked Musk to “send the location” via Instagram, and Musk replied, “If it’s real, we should do it,” sparking interest in whether they would actually have a fighting match.
However, the actual face-off fizzled out when Zuckerberg suggested a date for the match on the thread in August and the UFC president proposed to hold it as a charity event, but Musk did not take it seriously and posted that it was “time to move on to the next step.”
