Democrats Triumph in Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia
U.S. Supreme Court Overturns ‘Roe v. Wade’ Ruling Last June
Despite recent polls showing U.S. President Joe Biden trailing behind former President Donald Trump, the Democrats have emerged victorious in some state-level elections. The Biden administration interpreted this as voters recognizing the legitimacy of his agenda and role.
According to U.S. political news outlet The Hill on the 8th (local time), White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said in a briefing, “President Biden’s values and agenda had a significant victory across the country last night.” She added, “Voters in Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia once again supported President Biden’s agenda.” She continued, “We have always emphasized that voting is important, but polls are not. We will continue to focus on efforts to grow the economy, lower the cost of living, and protect fundamental freedoms.”
This election is interpreted as indicating a rise in Democratic support following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of the ‘Roe v. Wade’ decision last June, which recognized a woman’s right to have an abortion as a constitutional right. Even in Ohio, a Republican stronghold, a constitutional amendment that enshrines the right to abortion in the state constitution was passed.
Vice President Kamala Harris also stated, “American citizens are ready to stand up for individual freedom and America’s promise of freedom, as they have said in the vote.” She added, “Last night was a good night for democracy.” She emphasized that “from the midterm elections to last night, voters have made it clear that the government should not dictate what a woman should do with her body.”
Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Biden’s Campaign Strategy Chair, said in a statement, “In the hundreds of elections since former President Trump appointed a conservative Supreme Court Chief and overturned the ‘Roe v. Wade’ decision, we have seen Americans overwhelmingly side with President Biden and the Democrats.” She added, “The same choice will be presented to voters next November. We are confident that Americans will send President Biden and Vice President Harris back to the White House.”
