The number of direct flights between the U.S. and China has significantly increased.

China’s Civil Aviation Administration announced on the 9th that the number of direct flights between the U.S. and China has increased from 48 to 70 per week, starting from that day, as reported by China Central Television (CCTV).

CCTV reported that “the increase in flights is aimed at promoting a stable recovery of flights between the two countries according to market demand.” Each country operates 35 flights.

This measure was announced amidst speculation in anticipation of the upcoming summit between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The U.S. Department of Transportation approved an increase in flights for Chinese airlines on the 27th of last month.

The U.S. and China operated over 300 flights per week in 2019, but operations were virtually suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since last May, when the number of direct flights increased to 24, the number of flights has gradually expanded.
