Ukraine claims to have destroyed 15 drones targeting Kyiv
Over the weekend, Russia and Ukraine exchanged drone attacks aimed at each other’s capitals.
The Russian Ministry of Defense issued a statement on the 19th (local time) saying, “Ukraine attempted a terrorist attack on Russian territory facilities with a drone at 1 a.m., but it failed.”Air defense forces shot down the drone over the outskirts of Bogorodsky, northeast of Moscow.
According to the Russian daily Kommersant, this marks the first instance since the 7th of last month that air defense forces have shot down a drone flying towards Moscow. Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, posted on Telegram that day, “Tonight, the air defense unit in the Bogorodsky region thwarted a drone attack aimed at Moscow,” and “There were no casualties or damage from falling debris, and emergency services are working at the scene.”
Ukraine also revealed that drones had attacked its capital, Kyiv, for two days. Serhiy Popko, the military governor of Kyiv, said, “The enemy has attacked our capital for two days in a row,” and “The drones came from several directions.” The Ukrainian Joint Chiefs of Staff separately announced, “We destroyed 15 of the 20 enemy drones aimed at Kyiv,” and “There are no reports of casualties or significant destruction.”
The Ukrainian Air Force revealed that it had shot down 29 out of 38 Shahed drones launched from Russia the previous day. As a result of the air raid, about 2,000 households in the Odessa region experienced a power outage. The Ukrainian Air Force claimed, “This drone attack is the largest scale since the end of September.”
