Unification with South Korea Declared Impossible
North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, declared that “unification with South Korea is impossible.”
North Korean leader Kim made this statement on the 5th day of the key party meeting held on the 30th, according to the KCNA on the 31st. In his New Year’s address, Kim formally declared the inter-Korean relationship as a “state-to-state” relationship, completely denying the “special relationship aiming for unification” maintained so far.
Kim said, “The reality is presenting us with an urgent need to re-establish our position on inter-Korean relations and unification policies,” and “Now, we need to acknowledge the reality and clarify our relationship with South Korea more clearly.”
Emphasizes Irreversible Hostility Between North and South
He further emphasized that it is a critical error to consider those who label them as “enemies” and collude with foreign forces for objectives like “regime collapse” and “unification by absorption” as potential partners for reconciliation and unification. He stated that the inter-Korean relationship has now irrevocably solidified into hostility between two separate nations, akin to a relationship between warring countries rather than a bond based on ethnic commonality and homogeneity.
At the same time, Kim completely denied the movement to improve inter-Korean relations by past regimes. He argued, “The wicked ambition of traitors to collapse our system and regime was no different whether they advocated ‘democracy’ or wore the mask of ‘conservatism.'”
Warning and Need for Nuclear Preparedness
Kim also emphasized the need for heightened preparedness in a potential nuclear crisis. He noted the need to be ready to swiftly respond and mobilize all available resources and capabilities, including nuclear power, to address any major incidents that could affect the entire territory of South Korea. He issued a warning that if the United States and South Korea continue with military confrontation, they would face the immediate deployment of their nuclear deterrence capabilities.
The KCNA said of Kim’s remarks, “A policy has been proposed for a fundamental directional change in the South sector, based on a cool analysis of the painful history of inter-Korean relations that have only repeated distrust and confrontation.”
