Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un Sister’s Criticism of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s New Year’s Speech
Kim Yo Jong, the deputy director of North Korea’s Workers’ Party, criticized President Yoon Suk Yeol’s New Year’s speech on February 2, stating, “His paradoxical assertion that he will complete the U.S.-South Korea extended deterrence system in the first half of this year has once again granted us the necessity and legitimacy to accelerate our acquisition of overwhelming nuclear power further.”
In her New Year’s message to the President of South Korea, Kim stated, “We warmly welcome President Yoon’s continued unique contribution to the dramatic increase in our country’s military strength this year as well.”
Kim sarcastically praised President Yoon for making security instability a daily happening in South Korea, stating, “It is entirely due to President Yoon’s merit” and that he is a ‘special contributor’ for aiding North Korea in strengthening its defensive military power. Also, she added that thanks to President Yoon defining the North Korean regime as an ‘enemy that must be annihilated,’ they were able to identify who their real enemy was clearly.
She went on to say that due to his persistent advocacy for unification under a liberal democratic system, they were able to dispel any misconceptions among their people regarding national reconciliation, solidarity, and peaceful unification. She credited his interference with the provisions of the September 19 Inter-Korean Military Agreement for reinvigorating their military activities, which had been limited for years. Moreover, “the emergence of a brave president who has no worries about the consequences of his actions and words is an unparalleled boon for us,” she said.
Kim criticized President Yoon by contrasting him with former President Moon Jae In. While describing former President Moon as a “unique and cunning person,” she pointed out that “It was a great loss that we wasted a considerable amount of time unable to do what we had to do to strengthen our power because Moon Jae In’s will for peace tied us down.” In contrast, she praised President Yoon, stating, “He is a special contributor who has solidly contributed to our self-defensive and justified military power,” and “He is allowing us to make up for what we lost during Moon Jae In’s time tenfold, twentyfold, or even more.”
Earlier, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also announced after the Workers’ Party plenary meeting at the end of last year that he would continue to push for “preparations for a great event for the pacification of the entire South Korean territory.”
