Our military has responded to North Korea’s firing by conducting naval artillery fire.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the 6th Marine Division located on Baengnyeong Island and the Yeonpyeong Unit on Yeonpyeong Island conducted naval artillery fire training from around 3 p.m. today, using K9 self-propelled guns and tank guns, Yonhap News reported.
This is the first time since the September 19, 2018, Inter-Korean Military Agreement was signed that the marine unit stationed in the northwest sea has conducted naval artillery fire training.
Earlier today, the North Korean military fired more than 200 rounds of coastal artillery in the area north of Baengnyeong Island and Yeonpyeong Island.
The shells fired by the North Korean military fell in the sea buffer zone to the north of the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea.
The sea buffer zone was established in the area around the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West and East Seas to prevent naval clashes, according to the September 19, 2018, Inter-Korean Military Agreement. Firing artillery and conducting naval maneuvers in the sea buffer zone is a violation of the military agreement.
This is the first time in a year and a month since December 6, 2022, that the North Korean military has conducted firing training in the sea buffer zone, which was conducted towards the East Sea from the areas of Goseong and Geumgang in Gangwon Province.
Our military has defined this firing as a provocation based on the fact that the North Korean military’s shells fell in the West Sea buffer zone and responded with naval artillery fire training.
