In response to North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un’s threat to ‘destroy’ South Korea if any attempt at military force is made, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed it as “mere wordplay.”
A Ministry official said on the 10th, “(Chairman Kim’s remarks) are premised on the ‘complete annihilation of South Korea,’ even though South Korea has never used military force against North Korea first.”
The official emphasized that “the government will firmly respond to any provocations from North Korea” and “any attempts to artificially create tension on the Korean Peninsula will ultimately harm the North Korean regime itself.”
The Korean Central News Agency reported that Chairman Kim, during his on-site guidance at a crucial military factory on the 8th and 9th, said, “If South Korea dares to use military force against our nation or threatens our sovereignty and safety, we will not hesitate to mobilize all means and capabilities at our disposal to destroy South Korea.”
This significantly heightens the military threat against South Korea, following his order at the end of last year’s Workers’ Party Plenary Meeting to “continue to push forward with preparations for a major conflict to pacify the entire territory of South Korea.”
