Kim Jong Un, the Chairman of North Korea, who is under international sanctions against North Korea, is attracting attention again with a new Mercedes-Benz vehicle. It is well known that Chairman Kim often drives multiple Mercedes-Benz cars at events and has a ‘love for Mercedes-Benz’.
In the documentary “The Great Turnaround, Victory and Transformation of 2023” aired on North Korea’s Central Television on the 15th, Chairman Kim was seen stepping out of a black SUV that appears to be his new official car. This vehicle is believed to be the ‘Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600’, the top-of-the-line SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz, with a Maybach label. The domestic price starts at 260 million KRW (approximately $219,000). The mark ‘Chairman of the State Affairs Commission’ is engraved on the right rear passenger door.

The North Korean leadership, including Chairman Kim, has recently been seen arriving at public events in new Mercedes-Benz vehicles, appearing to flout UN Security Council sanctions prohibiting the import of luxury vehicles and transportation means into North Korea.
He drove a Maybach S-Class 1st generation sedan when taking a commemorative photo with participants of the National Mothers’ Conference on December 8 last year. On the 20th, when encouraging those involved in the launch of the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM), he showed up driving a Maybach S-Class Limousine.
As North Korea has been showing off sedans so far, this time, they appeared in an SUV, suggesting that North Korea is unhesitatingly bringing in luxury items despite sanctions.
In the case of SUVs, Chairman Kim had previously mainly used Lexus, a luxury brand created by Japanese automaker Toyota for the U.S. market.
