The North Korean Ministry of National Defense announced that it conducted a critical test of the underwater nuclear weapon system “Haeil-5-23” in response to the US-South Korea-Japan naval training.

The North Korean Ministry of National Defense issued a statement on the 19th titled “We will never tolerate reckless military confrontation madness,” stating, “From January 15th to the 17th, the US nuclear aircraft carrier ‘Carl Vinson,’ the Aegis cruiser ‘Princeton,’ the Japanese Maritime ‘Self-Defense Force,’ and South Korean naval vessels once again conducted a joint naval exercise in the waters around Jeju Island.”

The Ministry of National Defense pointed out, “This training has become a cause of further destabilizing the regional situation and poses a serious threat to our country (North Korea).”

It then announced, “We conducted a critical test of the underwater nuclear weapon system ‘Haeil-5-23’ in the East Sea of Korea.”

The Ministry of National Defense emphasized, “Our military’s underwater nuclear response preparedness is well being finished, and appropriate responsive actions at sea and underwater to suppress the military hostile acts of the US and allied navies will continue as they should.”

Furthermore, it raised its voice, saying, “We strongly condemn the reckless actions of the United States and its followers that have been severely threatening the safety of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) since the beginning of the new year and sternly warn of the disastrous consequences that could result from this.”

The North Korean Ministry of National Defense stated, “We will never tolerate the reckless military confrontation madness of the enemies,” and added, “We will firmly defend the safety of the country and the peace of the region by instilling fear in the enemy through responsible and swift exercise of deterrence, backed by powerful force.”

In the exercise, a total of 9 vessels participated, including two of our navy’s Aegis destroyers, the Sejong the Great, five from the US Navy’s 1st Carrier Strike Group, including the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, and two from the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Aegis destroyer Kongo.
