Defense Minister Shin Won Sik visited the 17th Fighter Wing, which operates the 5th-generation stealth fighters, on the day North Korea provoked conflict with cruise missiles to emphasize the deterrence against the North.
According to the Ministry of Defense, on the 24th, Shin visited the 17th Fighter Wing to check the readiness and encourage the troops.
After receiving a report on the readiness status, Shin emphasized, “North Korea has continuously maintained its strategy of turning the entire Korean peninsula into communism and has defined the Republic of Korea as its principal enemy. Recently, it has threatened ‘not to recognize any boundaries, including the Northern Limit Line (NLL), and completely conquer, repress, and recover the South.”
Shin also said, “North Korea is seriously threatening us by launching several cruise missiles after claiming to have tested the underwater nuclear weapons system recently.”
The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on the same day, “We detected several cruise missiles launched into Yellow Sea by the North around 7 am. Korean and American intelligence authorities are under precise analysis for the details.”
Shin emphasized, “If the Kim Jong Un regime makes the worst choice to wage war, you should be at the vanguard of eradicating the regime at the earliest possible time as ‘the unseen force protecting the Republic of Korea.'” He added, “Prepare thoroughly and in advance through constant training.”
Shin also visited the alert room to encourage the efforts of the pilots and mechanics of the unit.
He said, “No matter how advanced our weapon system, the most important thing is the combatant who operates it. In case of an enemy provocation, we will firmly respond with mental toughness under the principle of ‘immediate, strong, and thorough’ with the stealth infiltration and ultra-precision strike capability of the F-35.”
