The West Sea Fisheries Management Service of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has seized two Chinese fishing vessels for illegal fishing without logging in the waters near Sinan County, South Jeolla Province.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 30th that it had seized two Chinese fishing vessels that violated the regulations by entering our waters 58 miles southwest of Hongdo, Heuksan-myeon, Sinan, South Jeolla Province. Chinese fishing vessels entering Korea’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) must record their catch in the fishing log within two hours after each fishing operation, according to relevant laws and agreements between the two countries.
The two Chinese fishing vessels seized this time are accused of fishing from 10:30 pm on the 29th to 8:26 am, catching about 2,646 lbs of fish but not recording it in the fishing log. The number of crew members on board the seized vessels is 8 each, totaling 16.
The West Sea Fisheries Management Service said it is currently transporting the seized vessels to Mokpo Port in South Jeolla Province. If the charges are finally confirmed, they plan to impose measures such as fines in accordance with relevant laws.
Jong-Mo Kim, the head of the West Sea Fisheries Management Service, said, “Cases of not recording in the fishing log to deceive the amount of fish caught in our Exclusive Economic Zone are occurring,” and “We will do our best to protect our marine resources by strengthening onboard investigations of Chinese fishing vessels.”
