As serious natural disasters are occurring in various parts of the world, predictions have emerged that abnormal weather phenomena could also affect North Korea in the future.
The Rodong Sinmun quoted the forecast of the commander of the Central Weather Forecast Team of The State Hydro-Meteorological Administration, predicting that “From late spring to early summer this year, there will be less rain in North Korea and drought phenomena will occur in various regions, mainly in the southern regions such as Hwanghae Province.”
While spring droughts are generally common in North Korea, this year’s onset is expected to be slightly later than average.
With this year’s monsoon season also expected to be later than usual, there is a possibility that the spring drought period will be prolonged. Although the temperature during the drought period is expected to be higher than average, temperatures in various regions, including the east and west coasts, may be cooler in early summer.
In recent years, there have been rare instances where climate change and low temperatures during spring or summer have sustained impact on crop growth. This year, too, it is predicted that low-temperature phenomena will occur in various regions in early summer.
