The Upcoming Kia K4
Poses a Serious Threat to the Hyundai Avante
What are Its Three Advantages?
Despite the numerous competitors, the Hyundai Avante has consistently maintained its position as the top compact sedan. The only comparable model in the Korean market is the Kia K3, but it’s not a match. Last year, the K3 sold 13,204 units, only a fifth of the Avante’s 65,364 units.
While the Avante’s name value is unmatched, the K3’s product quality falls short. As a result, Kia is preparing the K4 (codenamed CL4), a successor model to the K3 with a significantly larger size. This new model, expected to be unveiled in the first half of this year, is uniquely aimed at the North American market. Look at some of the features captured in spy shots and see how the K4 plans to surpass the Avante.
Overwhelming Body Size
Equipped with a Panoramic Sunroof
The Kia K4 is based on the same third-generation platform as the current Avante CN7 but is expected to be the largest in its class. According to industry sources, the K4 will have a body size comparable to the previously discontinued mid-size sedan, the Kia Optima, and the interior is said to offer space similar to the Lotze. The Avante is 185.4 inches long, while the Optima is 186.8 inches. The wheelbase significantly affects the interior space and is 107.1 inches for both the Avante and the Lotze.
The larger body size directly affects the convenience specifications. Looking at the spy shots, it’s clear that a panoramic sunroof has been applied. This is a distinguishing feature from the Avante, which has a regular sunroof of average size. This is possible thanks to the spacious roof typical of sedan-SUV crossovers. While sedans typically have a boundary between the roof and the rear window at the top of the C-pillar, the K4 has a roof area that extends further back.
A More Sophisticated Interior
with ccNC Not Found in the Avante
Expectations are high for a more sophisticated interior. A panoramic, curved display is now a must. This car is expected to feature Hyundai Group’s latest infotainment system, ccNC, which has not been installed in the facelift model of the Avante. The unique two-tone steering wheel with two-tone rims adds a touch of luxury. The rim has a D-cut shape on both the top and bottom and the Kia logo is located on the right side of the horn cover, not in the center. Another point of interest is the area around the center console.
A water bottle is placed right in front of the center console armrest, suggesting that the cup holder is located towards the back. Therefore, it is highly likely that the gear lever, like in the previous K3 and Avante, is mechanically installed on the center floor. This could be seen as a feature reflecting the preferences of North American consumers who value the reliability and feel of mechanical parts.
Radical Fastback Rear
Earns the Nickname “Little Stinger”
The radical exterior is also enough to captivate consumers who are considering purchasing an Avante. The unique fastback line has evoked reactions of nostalgia for the discontinued Stinger. Kia’s latest design element, the Starmap Signature Lighting, is expected to be applied with an appropriate shape and proportion, further enhancing the finish. The second-row door handle hidden near the C-pillar is expected to emphasize the sporty coupe-like silhouette and bold side character line.
The powertrain will likely include a 1.6L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated turbo engine, a hybrid, and a 2.0L 4-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. It is unknown whether the K4 will be launched in the Korean market, but the chances seem slim as it is not included in the list of upcoming domestically produced cars.
