A 16-year-old boy from Vietnam tragically died unexpectedly in his home after a late-night shower.
According to Sanook, on March 14, the boy died from a stroke, and they reported it was due to a pre-existing cerebrovascular disease.
A member of the Vietnam Vascular Disease Association shared that the probability of a stroke occurring at a young age is typically very low.
They also stated, “Bathing at night can suddenly raise or lower blood pressure. If the boy had been stressed from classes or had finished exercising and taken a shower, it could have triggered irregular heartbeats and rising blood pressure. This can lead to a cerebral hemorrhage and the formation of a blood clot in the arteries, resulting in brain death.”
Some health experts recommend avoiding late-night showers, as they can disrupt the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. The body’s core temperature typically lowers in the evening to prepare for sleep, and hot showers can counteract this process, making it harder to fall asleep.
A doctor at Hanoi Neurology Hospital highlights that specific individuals might be at an increased risk for cardiovascular complications, particularly stroke. This risk could be heightened during cold showers at night due to potential blood vessel constriction. People with pre-existing conditions like coronary heart disease or a history of high blood pressure are advised to consult with a healthcare professional regarding suitable showering practices.
They also warned, “Stiffness, paleness, and in severe cases, cardiac arrest or sudden death can occur during sleep after taking a shower.”
They advised that taking a shower with warm water is recommended to dry off properly and that one should wear warm clothes after bathing.
