Criticized as “Waste of Tax Money,” “Monstrosity”
Sculpture of ‘Han River Monster’ Worth 200 Million Won
To Be Removed After 10 Years
After a decade, The Host monster sculpture bids Yeouido Han River Park farewell.
According to Seoul City, on April 18, a public art review committee will be held next month to review all the sculptures installed in the Han River Park, including The Host sculpture.
The decision to remove the monster sculpture follows criticisms regarding its aesthetics and alignment with the park’s overall design. “We are committed to removing outdated structures that detract from the park’s beauty or pose safety risks,” an official explained. Unfortunately, ‘The Host’ sculpture fell under this category due to ongoing public discussions about its suitability.”
The Host sculpture is located between Mapo Bridge and Wonhyo Bridge. It is a replica of the monster that appeared in director Bong Joon Ho’s movie The Host, which attracted 10 million viewers in 2006.
The sculpture was created in 2014 by former Seoul Mayor Park Won Soon. It’s 3 meters tall, 10 meters long, and weighs 5 tons, with an investment of 180 million won ($160,000).
It was created to create a tourism product linked to storytelling in the Han River at that time.
The news of the sculpture’s removal sparked a wave of online reactions. While some fans, particularly those from abroad, expressed fondness for the landmark and its connection to the film’s environmental themes, others voiced concerns about its aesthetics and suitability for the park’s atmosphere. Some even felt it might frighten visitors unfamiliar with the movie. Overall, opinions were divided, with supporters and detractors of the sculpture making their voices heard.
The sculptures installed in the Han River Park are expected to be removed as early as the first half of the year, following procedures such as a public art review committee and expert advice.
