A current pharmacist said that Tanghulu is the worst defective food in history and that he will never give Tanghulu to his children.

Pharmacist Lee Seong Geun recently uploaded a video titled “Tanghulu is the worst defective food in history! As a pharmacist, I will never give Tanghulu to my children. Don’t eat Malatang and Tanghulu. Koreans are in big trouble” on his YouTube channel ‘Little Pharmacist.’ Why did he categorize Tanghulu as the ‘worst defective food’?

Lee said, “Many children and adults are eating Tanghulu. Especially it has become a course to eat Tanghulu after Malatang. I heard that Tanghulu mukbang, Tanghulu ASMR, and Tanghulu making videos are also popular. Tanghulu has several reasons why it is bad for your health. Of course, among the foods these days, Tanghulu is not the only one that is bad for your health, but after seeing elementary school children eating a lot of Tanghulu, I became worried and made the video.” He explained the reasons why Tanghulu is terrible for your health.

Lee said, “Tanghulu is a food made by coating fruit with melted sugar. Some may think it is healthy because it is made with fruit.” He said, “However, the combination of fruit and sugar can be the worst for your health.” He explained the reasons as follows.

“The fructose in fruit has the advantage of being able to be used as energy without the help of insulin. So, in the days when food was scarce, fruit was a very efficient source of energy. However, when you consume grape sugar rich in sugar and fructose-rich in fruit together, the body cannot immediately use fructose as an energy source, and it is stored as fat in the liver and abdomen. This leads to obesity, fatty liver, abdominal obesity, and gout. Therefore, it should not be given to children suffering from metabolic syndrome such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and gout. Tanghulu, which is becoming popular in this era of rapid increase in childhood obesity, is not a food that should be recommended for children.”

Lee said Tanghulu is a dangerous food and explained that “when sugar is melted, a large amount of final glycation end products, known as advanced glycation end products (AGEs), are produced.”

According to Lee, AGEs combine sugar and protein at high temperatures. AGEs inhibit enzyme activity by binding to body cells and cause inflammation of immune cells and nerve cells. It particularly easily combines with collagen, making the skin rough and wrinkled. It accelerates aging. It also stiffens blood vessel walls and causes muscle and joint pain. If the level of AGEs is high, it can lead to various types of cancer. There is a study that shows that women with high levels of AGEs in their blood are more likely to die from heart disease, and there is also a study that shows that women with polycystic ovary syndrome have high levels of AGEs. Lee explained the dangers of AGEs and said, “That’s why I don’t give my children Tanghulu, which is full of AGEs.”
