Why You Should NEVER Peel Off Your Gel Manicure By Yourself

daily Views

Today, many prefer gel nails over regular manicures. They can last unchanged for a month. But, the longevity can damage the nails. The lamp used to harden gel nails is unsafe, and improper removal can harm the nails. Should we frequently opt for gel nails for a change in mood?

Understanding Gel Nails

You harden gel nails by exposing the gel to UV light. Nail artists use this principle to create designs depending on the customer’s nail shape, apply color, and even decorate with gems. UV gel is non-toxic, has minimal odor, lasts longer, and doesn’t come off with regular acetone.

The Gel Nail Lamp Isn’t Entirely Safe

Unlike tanning devices, the lamps used for nail drying have been linked to cell mutations that could lead to skin cancer. Studies have reported that gel nail lamps can increase the rate of cell mutations in melanoma by up to 12%. The UV light from the lamps damages the cell’s DNA. Experts say more long-term research is needed.

What Happens When You Peel Off Gel Nails?

Peeling off gel nails can also strip the natural nail. Typically, after a month, the nails underneath are damaged. When the gel is removed, weakened nails can fracture, known as “onycholysis.” If onycholysis worsens, the nails can detach from the skin.

Take a Break After Gel Removal

During gel application, nails are deprived of moisture and nutrients. Therefore, after removal, don’t reapply immediately. Nourish your nails to restore health and maintain shape. Before reapplying gel nails, apply a base to block harmful chemicals.

Safe Removal at Home

You can file gel nails, push back the cuticle, or use acetone to remove them. In that order, drilling, files, and removers cause the most damage. Especially with electric drills, it’s best to seek a professional. Use a “soak-off gel” or a specialized gel remover at home.

Continuous Stimulation on Nails

Nails are composed of the protein keratin. Long-term exposure to nail art can weaken the keratin bonds, leading to nails that split or break easily. This can lead to nails lifting or becoming infected.

Being Overzealous with Cuticles Can Cause Inflammation

Removing cuticles before nail art increases the risk of foreign particle penetration and bacterial infections. If manicures contain harmful substances like formaldehyde, they can influence the endocrine system and trigger inflammation. Continuous exposure to formaldehyde may increase cancer risk.

Ensure Cleanliness During the Procedure

For gel nail applications, ensure a clean environment. A non-hygienic setting can expose you to fungi or weaken the nails. Disposable tools are preferable. Otherwise, tools should be regularly sanitized. Nail artists should maintain personal hygiene to prevent the spread of bacteria.

Pedicures Can Exacerbate Fungus

Pedicures can strip the protective barrier around the toenails, increasing bacterial infection risks. Using unclean tools on multiple clients can transmit fungal infections. Long-term pedicures can allow water to seep into nail gaps, increasing fungal growth and potential health risks.

Exercise Caution When Doing Self-Treatments at Home

To save money, many do treatments at home. However, incorrect care can cause inflammation or deformities. Before manicures or pedicures, nails should be neatly trimmed and filed. Avoid using non-specialized tools like razors to avoid infections. Ensure thorough sanitation of tools.
