The performance of Qualcomm’s next-generation mobile platform has been unveiled. It boasts a formidable performance that surpasses the A17 Pro installed in the Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It’s attracting attention due to the high possibility of being installed in the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Qualcomm unveiled its next-generation mobile application processor (AP), ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’, on the 25th.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has eight cores. The number is the same as the second generation, but the configuration and performance have significantly improved.
The second generation consisted of ▲one 3.19GHz X3 high-performance core ▲two 2.8GHz A715 high-performance cores ▲two 2.8GHz A710 high-performance cores ▲three 2.02GHz A510 high-efficiency cores.
On the other hand, the third generation consists of ▲one 3.3GHz X4 high-performance core ▲three 3.2GHz A720 high-performance cores ▲two 3GHz A720 high-performance cores ▲two 2.3GHz A520 high-efficiency cores.
Qualcomm stated that by changing the core configuration of the third generation and increasing the L3 cache capacity, the performance was about 30% higher, and the power efficiency was about 20% higher than the second generation. The performance and power efficiency of the graphics processing unit (GPU) were also 25% higher than the second generation.
The performance of the artificial intelligence processing device (NPU) stands out. Compared to the second generation, artificial intelligence performance improved by 98%, and power efficiency improved by 40%. This is thanks to the enhanced performance of the artificial intelligence execution engine and the doubling of the shared memory bandwidth.
According to the benchmark tool Geekbench, the single-core score of the third generation is 2300, and the multi-core score is 7500. The single-core score of the A17 installed in the Apple iPhone 15 is 2900, and the multi-core score is 7400. The single-core score of the M1 chip installed in the 5th generation MacBook Pro is 2300, and the multi-core score is 8300. It has a formidable performance, equivalent to the M1 in single-core and the A17 in multi-core.
The test results for ‘Manhattan,’ which requires the highest specifications in the GFXBench test, have also been released. FHD is 280FPS (frames per second), and QHD is 173FPS. A17 FHD is 204FPS, and M1 FHD is 286FPS. M1 QHD is 134FPS. It overwhelms the A17 in FHD and is almost on par with the M1, and it overwhelms the M1 in QHD. It’s showing notebook-level performance in GPU, surpassing the iPhone. This is why Apple, which makes iPhones, and Samsung Electronics, which makes Galaxy phones, are nervous about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Samsung Electronics installs both Qualcomm AP and its own mobile AP, Exynos, in its smartphones. Through ‘grading,’ high-performance products are equipped with Qualcomm AP, and lower-grade products are equipped with Exynos. Some predict that Samsung Electronics will install the Exynos 2400 in the Galaxy S24 regular product and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the top model, the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
