Morning Sickness Survival Guide: Important Tips for Moms-to-Be

Eugene Park Views

Morning sickness is a common ailment many women experience during early pregnancy. We explore the uncomfortable symptoms, methods to alleviate them, and strategies for prevention.

1. Morning Sickness Symptoms

▶Vomiting and Nausea: Hormonal changes in early pregnancy can cause nausea. It often appears strongest in the morning, hence the term ‘morning sickness.’

▶Sensitivity to Certain Smells and Foods: During pregnancy, sensitivity to certain smells and foods can increase. This is one of the main symptoms of morning sickness.

▶Dehydration Symptoms: Persistent vomiting can cause loss of necessary body fluids, leading to dehydration. Symptoms include dry lips, frequent thirst, and dark-colored urine.

2. Morning Sickness Relief Methods

▶Change Eating Patterns: Instead of eating large meals once or twice daily, consume small amounts frequently. Avoid being on an empty stomach, especially before breakfast, as having a light meal can be helpful.

▶Preference for Refrigerated or Frozen Foods: Refrigerated or frozen foods tend to have less aroma, making them easier to eat during morning sickness.

▶Avoid Trigger Foods: If the smell or taste of certain foods triggers vomiting or nausea, it’s best to avoid those foods.

▶Consume Ginger: Ginger is one of the foods that can help relieve morning sickness. It can be consumed in the form of ginger tea, ginger candy, or ginger capsules.

▶Drink Water: Drink 8-10 cups of water a day to prevent dehydration. Especially after vomiting, sip water frequently.

▶Rest: Fatigue and stress can worsen morning sickness. Therefore, it’s essential to get enough rest.

▶Maintain Normal Weight: Excessive weight gain can exacerbate morning sickness, so proper weight management is necessary.

3. Morning Sickness Prevention

▶Balanced Diet: A balanced diet is essential during pregnancy. It greatly helps in preventing morning sickness. Eat several times a day to avoid being on an empty stomach.

▶Vitamin B6: Some studies suggest that Vitamin B6 can help alleviate symptoms of morning sickness. However, it’s not recommended to take supplements without a doctor’s guidance, so it’s best to consult before consumption.

▶Avoid Spicy Foods: From the beginning of pregnancy, preferring bland food over spicy or high-fat food can reduce the frequency or intensity of morning sickness.

▶Appropriate Exercise: Light exercise, mainly walking, can aid digestion and help prevent morning sickness.

▶Stress Management: Stress can worsen morning sickness, so it’s good to try stress relief methods like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing.

While various methods can alleviate and prevent morning sickness, there’s no guarantee that all methods are effective for everyone. Therefore, it’s essential to find the most suitable method for your situation.
