Waking Up to Pus on Your Pillow
A Symptom of Otitis Externa?
Otitis externa is an inflammation that occurs in the external ear canal, which stretches from the ear hole to the eardrum. Recently, there has been an increase in cases of people complaining of otitis externa symptoms after using earphones, and even companies that produce earphones are considering compensation for these cases. Why would otitis externa suddenly occur from earphones being used without any issues? And what could be the cause for those who suffer from chronic otitis externa even without earphones?
What Causes Otitis Externa?
Firstly, otitis externa can occur due to trauma. Examples of such trauma include using cotton swabs or ear picks, which can cause skin damage and lead to otitis externa. Another reason is the removal of earwax, which weakens the ear’s defense mechanism as it acts as a barrier against bacterial invasion.
Secondly, it can occur when the ear is excessively exposed to moisture, such as swimming, diving for extended periods, or excessive sweating. Recently, in-ear earphones that fit snugly in the ear can also cause otitis externa for the same reasons.
What are the Symptoms of Otitis Externa?
When otitis externa occurs, it initially starts with mild itching and the discharge of wet earwax. If pus begins to discharge and the pain intensifies, a longer recovery period may be needed. Treatment involves using antibiotics, steroid-containing drops, and cleaning the external ear canal using an endoscope. As moisture creates an environment conducive to otitis externa, it is essential to keep the ear dry.
What are the Risks of Otitis Externa?
Otitis externa can lead to hearing loss. If your ear feels itchy and prickly, it could be due to inflammation. Using a cotton swab to relieve this can not only worsen the condition but also lead to hearing loss. The ear canal can shrink and become blocked, leading to decreased hearing. If water enters the ear, it is better to dry it with a hairdryer or fan rather than using a cotton swab. If there is too much earwax, it is best to gently remove only the outer part of the ear canal, being careful not to damage the skin.
