Here Are 10 Expert Tips to Stay Cold-Free This Autumn

Eugene Park Views

The transition between seasons, characterized by significant temperature fluctuations and unpredictable weather, is when people are prone to catching a cold. To prevent a cold during this period and maintain good health, certain habits and preventive measures are necessary. Let’s explore some practical ways to avoid catching a cold.

10 Habits to Prevent a Cold During Seasonal Changes

1. Maintain Body Temperature

The first step in preventing a cold during the transition between seasons is to maintain a suitable body temperature. During this time, the temperature can drop significantly in the morning and evening, so it’s essential to dress appropriately to regulate body temperature. A cold environment can weaken the immune system and make you more susceptible to catching a cold, so it’s advisable to wear a light coat when going out.

2. Maintain Personal Hygiene

Most cold viruses are transmitted through hands. Therefore, personal hygiene practices such as hand washing are crucial in preventing a cold. After returning home from outside, before meals, and after using the bathroom, it’s essential to wash your hands thoroughly. It’s also advisable to wash your hands before touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. If possible, using a hand sanitizer can be helpful.

3. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated can also help prevent a cold. When the body is dehydrated, the protective function of the mucous membranes weakens, making it easier for viruses to invade. Therefore, it’s advisable to drink at least 8 cups of water a day, and drinking warm water or herbal tea can also be beneficial.

4. Maintain a Regular Lifestyle

Maintaining a regular lifestyle also plays a crucial role in boosting the immune system. Sufficient sleep and regular meals strengthen the immune system and increase virus resistance. In particular, lack of sleep can weaken the immune system, so it’s advisable to get 7-8 hours of sleep every night.

5. Balanced Diet

Maintaining a balanced diet is also essential for preventing a cold. Consuming fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C can aid in boosting the immune system. Additionally, it’s crucial to consume an appropriate amount of protein and healthy fats to strengthen the body’s defenses.

6. Regular Exercise

Moderate exercise has the effect of strengthening the immune system. Engaging in light activities like walking or jogging for about 30 minutes, 3-4 times a week, can improve body circulation and help boost immunity. However, excessive exercise can weaken the immune system, so caution is needed.

7. Stress Management

Lastly, stress management is essential in preventing a cold. High-stress levels can weaken the body’s immune response. Therefore, it’s necessary to effectively manage stress through regular yoga, meditation, and hobbies.

8. Indoor Environment Management

Managing the indoor environment is also important during the transition between seasons. Prevent dryness by maintaining appropriate indoor temperature and humidity and minimize the survival environment of viruses. The indoor temperature should be around 64.4~71.6°F, and the humidity should be maintained at 40~60%. Regular ventilation to keep the indoor air fresh and reduce the concentration of harmful substances such as viruses and fine dust is also important.

9. Vitamin D Intake

Vitamin D supports the normal function of the immune system and helps reduce the risk of respiratory diseases like a cold. The most natural way to get vitamin D is through direct exposure to sunlight, but this can be difficult during the transition between seasons. Therefore, consuming foods rich in vitamin D (fish, egg yolk, milk, etc.) or considering supplements, if necessary, can be beneficial.

10. Adequate Rest

Lastly, sufficient rest is significant for the recovery and strengthening of the immune system. Despite a busy daily life, it’s essential to take enough rest and soothe your tired body and mind. Rest includes not only physical stability but also mental stability. Make good use of your leisure time and engage in stress-reducing activities to maintain overall health.

Preventing a cold during the transition between seasons starts with small daily habits. Let’s maintain the 10 habits mentioned above and have a healthy seasonal transition.
