① The restaurant where you pay to get slapped
A video of an employee slapping a customer at a Japanese restaurant has been making waves online. Surprisingly, instead of becoming upset, the customers who receive the slaps genuinely enjoy the experience.
This restaurant provides an unconventional service where customers willingly pay to receive slaps. Indeed, visitors willingly pay for the distinctive experience of receiving a slap.
The New York Post has reported that a restaurant in Nagoya, Japan, called Shachihoko-ya, offers a service where female employees slap customers in exchange for money.
The viral video showcases female staff dressed in traditional Japanese kimonos or professional business suits, repeatedly administering vigorous slaps to customers’ faces.
② Overcoming business crisis thanks to ‘face-slapping’
The “Face-slapping” service was initially presented to capture people’s attention. It was originally provided for free. Nevertheless, with growing interest and an expanding customer base, payment is now required to experience the service of getting slapped.
At Shachihoko-ya, a minimum payment of 300 yen (approximately $2.71) is required to get a slap. If you request a specific employee to slap you, you must pay an additional fee of 500 yen (about $4.52).
This restaurant opened in 2012 and was on the verge of closing due to business difficulties. However, this service increased the number of customers. Eventually, the restaurant overcame the crisis.
The restaurant has gained popularity among Japanese men, women, and foreign tourists. As a result, they had to hire more female employees, even though initially only one female staff member participated.
③ The unusual service is no longer offered
Although the face-slapping service was once top-rated, Shachihoko-ya announced last year that they would no longer offer it. They had not expected the videos they had uploaded before to become so well-known.
On Shachihokoya’s ex-Twitter account, a message was posted saying, “Currently, Shachihokoya does not offer face-slapping service. We appreciate your interest, but we ask that you not visit to get slapped.”
Meanwhile, apart from the Japanese restaurant offering face-slapping service, there are a few other restaurants where you can have unique experiences. One of them is a restaurant in Sydney called ‘Karen’s Restaurant.’
“Karen” is a term that originated from memes in English-speaking countries. It started being used as a pronoun for entitled white women in their 40s and 50s.
To put it differently, it pertains to women who engage in confrontations over minor issues or display impolite behavior, which is why they are colloquially referred to as Karens. Sydney’s Karen Restaurant is an establishment that has embraced discourteous service as its defining theme.
Despite the rudeness being a part of the concept, the witty actions of the Karen employees add to the fun. The restaurant features intermittent comedy shows and other events, making it popular among young locals looking for a new experience.
