Eyes Feeling Irritated? Find Out What’s Behind Dry Eye Syndrome

Eugene Park Views

Various factors can cause the commonly encountered eye irritation in our daily lives and can be alleviated through proper handling. Let’s discover the leading causes of eye irritation, prevention and management methods, and explore ways to protect our eye health.

1. Main Causes of Eye Irritation

Environmental Factors
Intense sunlight, wind, dry air, dust, etc., directly stimulate the eyes and irritate them. In addition, irritation can occur when contaminated or chemical substances come into contact with the eyes.

Lifestyle Factors
Long-term use of computers or smartphones increases eye fatigue and irritates. Working under inappropriate lighting, irregular sleep patterns, and incorrect usage of vision correction tools also increase eye fatigue.

Health Conditions
Various eye diseases such as dry eye syndrome, allergies, infections, and complications after LASIK surgery are significant causes of eye irritation. Long-term eye irritation may be a sign of eye health problems.

2. Prevention and Lifestyle Adjustment

Proper Screen Use
When looking at a computer or smartphone screen, practice the “20-20-20 rule,” which is to look at something about 20 feet (approximately 6 meters) away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.

Improving Indoor Environment
Use an air purifier to maintain appropriate indoor humidity and minimize dust and pollutants.

Following Eye Protection Guidelines
Wear sunglasses or protective glasses in environments with strong sunlight or wind.

3. Proper Eye Health Management

Use of Moisturizers
Keep your eyes moist and reduce irritation by using artificial tears.

Nutrient Intake
Support eye health by consuming foods rich in Vitamin A and Omega-3 fatty acids. Good food examples include carrots, spinach, and salmon.

Regular Ophthalmic Checkups
Regularly check the condition of your eyes to detect and manage eye health problems early.

Expert Diagnosis
If you have persistent eye irritation or other symptoms, consult an ophthalmologist. The expert can provide a treatment plan suitable for your condition and, in some cases, may recommend medication or other medical measures.
