What circumstances lead divorced individuals to consider remarrying?
Recently, remarriage information company OnlyU and marriage information company Bienarae surveyed ‘Under what circumstances do you consider remarriage?’ among 518 divorced men and women (259 each) across the nation.
The survey results were unexpected.
For men, 28.2% selected ‘having to eat all three meals in a restaurant’ as the top reason. This was followed by ‘handling housework alone’ (23.5%), ‘educating children of the opposite sex’ (19.3%), and ‘when a single serving at a restaurant is not enough’ (14.7%).
For women, the top reason was ‘major or small matters such as moving’ (32.4%). The second was ‘concern from the elderly parents being alone’ (23.6%), the third was ‘handling housework alone’ (18.5%), and the fourth was ‘educating children of the opposite sex’ (12.4%).
In response to the question ‘Why is remarriage not as easy as one might think’, men chose ‘unrealistic views on remarriage’ (33.2%) as the top reason. They also mentioned ‘lack of will to remarry’ (27.4%), ‘excessive self-love’ (17.4%), and ‘lack of understanding of men by women’ (15.1%).
On the other hand, 35.1% of women chose ‘lack of empathy’ as the top reason. The second was ‘lack of understanding of women by men’ (26.3%), the third was ‘lack of will to remarry’ (18.1%), and the fourth was ‘unrealistic views on remarriage’ (14.3%).
In relation to this, OnlyU advised, “Those considering remarriage have experienced the pain of a failed marriage and face many factors when looking for a remarriage partner, such as their own and their potential partner’s children, the limited number of people eligible for remarriage compared to first-time marriage candidates, and prejudices against divorced individuals of the opposite sex. Thus, it is important in remarriage for one to adopt an attitude of understanding and consideration for their partner so they don’t miss an opportunity when a potential spouse appears.”
This news received a lot of attention, with over 28,000 views and 423 comments on the online community TheQoo. Netizens reacted with various comments such as “After all, they want to remarry for good meals”, “Why don’t they just cook for themselves?”, “Why not try to live a bit more independently”, “Both sides just seem to want help with things they can’t do well on their own”, and “Men can just eat out, women can call a moving company”.
