① The Controversy Over Taxi Scams

Taxis are often a subject of controversy in many countries around the world. Unexpected problems frequently arise when you take a taxi during an overseas trip. You may unknowingly fall victim to a taxi scam in many instances.

Despite being one of the most popular tourist destinations, Italy is no exception. While Italy attracts countless travelers, it’s also known for numerous complaints about taxis.

In Italy, taking a taxi can often lead to various issues, such as reckless driving, excessive meter fees, frequent union strikes, and differing fare regulations in each city. While Italy is a paradise for pizza and pasta lovers, the experience of using taxis can be quite the opposite. However, knowing the right way to use taxis can make the experience less daunting in Italy.

② Things to Remember for Travelers in Italy

First and foremost, travelers need to understand the taxi system in Italy. Italy’s taxes are regulated and licensed by local authorities, but each city has its own set of rules and standards.

Taxi drivers must adhere to strict regulations and make their professional driver’s licenses visible to passengers. It’s advisable to avoid unlicensed taxis, also known as NCC (Car Rental with Driver) or private car rentals, that don’t operate meters and charge excessive fares. Officially licensed taxis from the Italian government are always white, clearly marked with stickers, and display a taxi sign on the roof.

You should always verify that the taxi you’re about to take is legitimate before getting in.

The meter is the first thing passengers should check in a taxi. It’s crucial to pay close attention to the meter display.

When taking a taxi during your trip to Italy, make sure the meter displays “Tariffa 1”. If it shows “Tariffa 2”, you could be overcharged. “Tariffa 2” charges increase much faster than “Tariffa 1”, resulting in a higher taxi fare.

“Tariffa 2” should only be applied on specific routes such as highways. Taxi drivers are obligated to inform passengers whenever they change the meter.

③ Local Transportation Apps

So, how do you hail a taxi in Italy?
Unlike in other countries, hailing a moving taxi on the streets is rare in Italian cities.
Taxis are mainly found at designated taxi stands at major tourist attractions, airports, train stations, and city centers. Numerous taxi stands are scattered across the city, making them convenient.

If you need to take a taxi early in the morning or late at night, booking in advance is the best way.
Booking a taxi in advance is more reliable. It helps prevent being overcharged and overcomes any language barrier with the driver.

Moreover, it can also help protect you from any potential dangers when taking a taxi during less crowded hours.

To book a taxi in Italy, you can call for a taxi yourself or ask hotel staff to do it.

Using an app is recommended if you frequently use taxis during your trip. Freenow is a taxi app the Italian government runs, known for its lower fares than Uber. Using apps like itTaxi or Uber can also be a good option.

Booking through an app makes it easier to get a taxi, and you can use it conveniently even if you don’t speak the local language.
