Tokushima Treasures: Journey through Japan’s Serene Countryside

As more Koreans travel to Japan, small-town journeys are gaining popularity. Many have started seeking out Japan’s hidden travel destinations, and Tokushima is one of those lesser-known small towns. Located in the eastern part of Shikoku, Japan, it’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Osaka.

Tokushima offers a traditional Japanese atmosphere and plenty of attractions. Let’s take a look at some of the travel spots in Tokushima.

Bizan is a gentle mountain at an elevation of 951 feet, symbolizing Tokushima. If visitors take the cable car, they can get a panoramic view of downtown Tokushima. On clear days, they can see as far as Awaji Island and Kii Peninsula.

Bizan Park is a beautiful place that comes alive in spring with cherry blossoms. The park boasts 1,500 cherry trees that line its paths, making it an excellent place to view the blossoms from late March to early April. Locals love it for picnics and leisurely walks. Visitors can take the cable car to the top and enjoy the cherry blossoms. The park is equally famous for its spectacular night views, making it a popular dating spot for couples. It’s a great place to visit during the day, but the night view is even more impressive.

Awa Odori in Tokushima is a world-famous traditional festival. It takes place from August 12 to 15 every year. August 15 is Obon, a Japanese holiday, and it is believed that the dance of Awa Odori evolved from dances performed during this period.

At the Awa Odori Hall, visitors can experience everything about Awa Odori, even if it’s not August. Travelers can also see various items on display that trace its long history. At the Awa Odori Hall, visitors can directly experience Awa Odori. Tourists can watch performances and even learn to dance themselves.

The top floor of the museum is connected to Bizan Ropeway.

The Naruto Strait is between Naruto City in Tokushima Prefecture and Awaji Island. It is renowned for the Naruto whirlpools, a natural phenomenon caused by the strong tidal currents between the Seto Inland Sea and the Kii Channel. During the spring and fall seasons, visitors can witness some of the most stunning whirlpools in the world.

A 1,476-foot walkway called “Uzunomichi” and a whirlpool observation room exist. The glass floor allows explorers to watch the whirlpools beneath voyagers’ feet. The breathtaking whirlpools are a unique sight that can only be seen here. Tourists can also stroll while looking out at the open sea and take in the scenery from the observation deck in Naruto Park.

The Hyotanjima Cruise operates in front of the boat house on the Shinmachi River. From the boat, visitors can enjoy the cityscape of Tokushima. The boat travels approximately 3.7 miles in 30 minutes. Sightseers can savor the streets of Tokushima from the river. The boat is open-air, allowing travelers to enjoy the open feeling fully. In spring, the flowers along the street blend with the scenery, creating an even more beautiful landscape.

The boarding fee for the Hyotanjima Cruise is free, but voyagers have to pay a separate insurance fee. It’s $3.60 for adults and $1.80 for children. The boat operates every 40 minutes from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It’s a great time to explore Tokushima by boat.

All the buildings at the Tokushima Castle Site have been dismantled. There are no existing historical sites within the castle site. Tokushima Central Park is a park developed from part of the castle site. The park was completed in its current form after work began in 1905 to transform the castle site into a park.

Tokushima Central Park has become a resting place for citizens. In spring, it’s one of the best places in Tokushima to enjoy cherry blossoms. If someone visits Tokushima, it’s recommended to visit for cherry blossom. Travelers can fully enjoy the spring of Tokushima.
