Osaka’s Amusement Park Goes Viral on Social Media as ‘The Ultimate Experience’

Ikoma City, situated in the northwestern region of Nara Prefecture in Japan, is a serene retreat approximately a 30-minute drive from Osaka. Although less renowned among Korean travelers, it offers an idyllic escape characterized by its quaint small-town ambiance, making it an appealing destination for those seeking tranquility.

To access Ikoma City, travelers can embark on the Kishuji Rapid Service train from Osaka Station, transferring at Thrushashi to board the Kintetsu Nara Line express train bound for Ikoma Station. The rail journey spans approximately 40 minutes. Additionally, Ikoma City pairs harmoniously with Nara Park, a favored destination among Korean visitors.

Within Ikoma City lies an array of retro-inspired attractions, evoking a nostalgic charm that harkens back to yesteryears. Its scenic vistas and timeless allure beckons travelers to explore its hidden gems and discover the essence of its understated charm. Below are several noteworthy attractions waiting to be explored in Ikoma City.

Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park, a prominent destination in Ikoma City, opened its doors in 1929. Despite the passage of time, it boasts modern facilities while retaining a nostalgic ambiance with its retro rides. It’s a popular spot among both locals and tourists alike.

Perched at an elevation of 642 meters, Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park offers sweeping views of the cityscape, including the Osaka plains. At night, visitors can enjoy dazzling city lights.

The amusement park features 27 rides, including the unique “Cycle Monorail,” which allows riders to pedal along the track as if floating in the sky.

Riding the attractions offers a breathtaking experience, especially at sunset, when the changing hues of the sky paint a picturesque scene. A video captured at Ikoma Sanjo Amusement Park has garnered attention on social media, showcasing the monorail traversing the pink-tinted sky like a work of art.

The Kintetsu Ikoma Cable, the first cable car in Japan, celebrated its centennial in 2018. Connecting to the Hozenji Temple, the cable car ascends to the summit of Mount Ikoma, establishing itself as Japan’s oldest and longest cable car route.

One reason the Kintetsu Ikoma Cable is so popular is its distinctive design. The cable cars capture attention with shapes resembling animals, such as dogs and cats, and cute designs like cakes and pianos. Boarding the cable car evokes a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of childhood, prompting travelers to capture certification photos against the cable car backdrop.

Hozenji Temple used to require climbing steep mountain paths. However, thanks to the cable car, visitors can now ascend to the temple conveniently. On Mount Ikoma, Hozenji Temple is considered an intriguing temple. Mount Ikoma was revered as a “mountain where gods reside.”

At Hozenji Temple, a deity believed to have originated from Hinduism is enshrined. The temple houses a statue with an elephant’s head. Every January 16th, numerous people gather here to pray for worldly benefits. It’s a favored spot among locals.

Upon reaching Hozenji Temple, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Nara plains. It’s an ideal place to visit after riding the Kintetsu Ikoma Cable. Hozenji Temple’s “Shishikaku” building harmonizes Western and Japanese architectural styles. It’s a rare sight, designated as a significant cultural property.

Mount Ikoma (生駒山 Area) stands at an elevation of 642 meters and is located to the north of Kongō-Ikoma-Kisen Quasi-National Park. Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and Kansai Airport. Osaka Citizen’s Forest spreads across the mountainside. During spring, travelers flock here to admire cherry blossoms. Visiting Mount Ikoma offers leisure time to enjoy nature and scenic views.
