A man in his 70s sought help from an eye specialist to address severe pain and redness in his right eye, which made it difficult for him to open it.
Recently, Taiwanese media outlet ETtoday reported on a 71-year-old man from Changsha, China, who experienced these troubling eye symptoms.
The man experienced symptoms like redness, severe pain, tearing, and difficulty opening his eye, prompting him to see an ophthalmologist. To his astonishment, he discovered that he had been wearing a contact lens in his right eye for eight years without removing it. This situation nearly led to blindness.
The report revealed that an unidentified insect had flown into his right eye eight years ago, causing an infection. Since then, his eyes have remained red and painful.
Despite taking medication, his vision continued to worsen. The hospital initially recommended a contact lens to protect the cornea from damage, but after his symptoms improved, he failed to return for follow-ups and eventually forgot about it.
When he did return to the ophthalmologist, he was informed that restoring his vision would be difficult. He was then transferred to another hospital, where doctors discovered and removed the contact lens.
After a thorough examination, the doctors prescribed medication. The man’s discomfort has since decreased, and his distance vision has improved to 20/50.
Contact lenses designed for corneal ulcers are known for their high oxygen permeability, which enhances comfort and helps reduce pain. Typically, these lenses can be worn overnight for 3 to 7 days, with the removal schedule depending on the condition. Patients are required to have weekly check-ups.
