An accident occurred in the floating city of Venice, Italy, where a group of Chinese tourists fell into the water after ignoring the gondolier’s (gondola driver) instructions. They constantly moved around on the boat to take pictures.
According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the accident occurred on the afternoon of the 2nd (local time) as the gondola passed under a low bridge in the Rio de la Verona in Venice.
The gondolier shouted to the passengers that moving was dangerous. However, they decided not to listen, as taking pictures was more important to them. The gondola lost its balance and capsized as the tourists leaned to one side to take photos.
As a result, the gondolier and all six of the group fell into the cold water.
Thankfully, the shallow water posed no life-threatening danger. With help from several tourists nearby, the gondolier safely rescued all individuals.
Witnesses captured the incident on video, quickly turning it into a trending topic on local social media platforms.
The video captures a female tourist who fell into the water desperately trying to climb onto another passing gondola.
Corriere TV, operated by the daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, reported that all the tourists were Chinese.
Venetian nobles have used the gondola as a mode of transport since the 11th century. It is long and narrow, allowing it to navigate the shallow and narrow Venice canals, and passengers must not make large movements or stand up when on board.
In Italian, gondola means to shake.
