As Israel continues to attack the Gaza Strip under the pretext of eliminating Hamas, every day, more than ten children in the Gaza Strip lose their legs due to explosions and other incidents.
On the 7th (local time), the international children’s rights NGO Save the Children reported that since the war began on October 7th last year due to Hamas’s raid on Israel, more than 1,000 children have undergone surgery to amputate one or both legs, using statistics from UNICEF and reports from the World Health Organization (WHO). The ongoing war has collapsed the medical system in the Gaza Strip, and there is a severe shortage of medical supplies and personnel to treat wounds or alleviate pain, so most children have had to undergo surgery without anesthesia, the organization added.
Jason Lee, the director of Save the Children’s Palestine office, expressed that the harrowing sights and sounds of children grievously injured by bombs surpass human comprehension and endurance, regardless of the extent of warfare. He cautioned that history would judge everyone if the international community fails to uphold its obligations under international human rights law and neglects to take action against the gravest crimes presently feared.
Only “a definitive ceasefire” would end “the killing and maiming of civilians” and would enable “desperately needed humanitarian aid” to reach Gaza, including critical medicines for wounded children, he emphasized.
According to CNN, the Gaza Health Ministry, which Hamas governs, has announced that as of today, the death toll of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip since the war has reached at least 22,835, with 58,416 injured. It is reported that children, women, and older people are among the most affected.
