A tragic death occurred at an apartment complex in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon.
Yonhap News reported that around 2:30 a.m. on the 11th, a man in his 50s, identified as A was run over by a food waste collection truck that was backing up in an apartment complex in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon.
As a result of the accident, A was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest but eventually passed away.
The police are investigating the accident, suspecting that the driver did not see A, who was lying on the ground drunk, while the vehicle was reversing.
Accidents where drunk individuals lying on the road are run over by cars are more common than one might think.
On November 27 last year, a similar accident occurred on a road in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, where a vehicle driven by a man in his 60s, identified as B, ran over two men in their 60s, identified as C and D, who were lying on the ground drunk.
C and D, who were involved in the accident, were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and managed to survive.
In March of last year, a man in his 30s was also fined for hitting and killing a drunk person lying on the road.
The driver was handed over to trial on charges of running over and killing a person lying on the road while driving in Ulsan Buk-gu in the early morning of August 2022. He was fined 5 million won for violating the Special Act on the Handling of Traffic Accidents.
Meanwhile, according to the Road Traffic Act, it is prohibited to lie on the road and obstruct the flow of vehicles. If caught, one can be fined up to 200,000 won.
In addition, if an accident occurs due to lying or rolling on the road, the fault of the person lying down is generally considered to be about 40%, although this can vary depending on the speed of the offending vehicle.
