A man who was spotted smoking during a marathon in China has finally been banned from competing for 2 years.
A few years ago, rumors began circulating that a marathon participant, Mr. A, had been smoking during the race.
Mr. A, who participated in the marathon in 2018, 2019, and 2022, managed to get his marathon completion certificate, but his habit of smoking while running became a hot topic on the internet.
In response to the smoking incident, the Chinese Athletics Association stated, “Smoking in public places harms not only smokers but also others around them. Therefore, we recommend that participants maintain civility and be non-smoking competitors.”
Recently, Mr. A participated in another marathon and smoked again during the race, causing controversy.
Following this, according to Article 2 of the disciplinary measures in the ‘2024 C&D Xiamen Marathon Regulations’, it was announced that his marathon results and rankings have been revoked, and he will be temporarily unable to participate in any events hosted by the Xiamen Marathon Organizing Committee for 2 years.
They also added, “We have asked the China Athletics Association for further punishment.”
Apart from Mr. A, another participant was disciplined in the same marathon.
Participant B was banned from participating in any events hosted by the Xiamen Marathon Organizing Committee for 2 years because he used an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) emergency vehicle provided by the organizing committee without permission during the competition.
