On the 25th, Yonhap News reported that the Chuncheon District Court’s Yeongwol Branch Criminal Court 1 (Judge Kim Si-won) sentenced Ms. A (49, female) to four months in prison with a two-year suspended sentence for violating the Animal Protection Act. The court also ordered Ms. A to perform 40 hours of community service.

Ms. A was previously indicted for throwing her two pet dogs out of the window of a third-floor apartment in Taebaek, Gangwon Province, around 5:30 p.m. on August 28 last year, causing their deaths.

It is understood that she committed the crime by grabbing the pets by the scruff of their necks and throwing them out the window when they failed potty training.

The pet dogs were known to be puppies, only one to two months old at the time.

One of the dogs that fell into the apartment complex lost its life instantly, and the other was taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment but ultimately succumbed to its injuries.

During the court proceedings, the judge pointed out Ms. A, stating “You cruelly caused the death of the two puppies you were raising, which were only one to two months old, by throwing them out the window for no particular reason. Considering the method, the nature of the crime is egregious.”

Meanwhile, according to Article 10 of the Animal Protection Act (Prohibition of Animal Abuse, etc.), no one should kill an animal or cause it to die.

△ Acts that cause death by cruel methods such as hanging △ Acts of killing in public places or in front of other animals of the same species △ Acts of using animals as prey for other animals without any unavoidable reasons such as animal habits and ecological environment △ Any other acts that cause the death of animals without legitimate reasons defined by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, such as direct threats to human life and body or prevention of property damage, are all prohibited.

Violators can be punished with imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won (approximately $25,000).
