While Bae Hyunjin, a Member of Parliament from the ruling People Power Party, was attacked by a minor, key information about the suspect has been revealed.
Bae was knocked down by a stone swung by an unidentified man, Mr. A, in front of an elevator on the first floor of a building in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, around 5:18 p.m. on the 25th.
According to the police and others, Mr. A approached Bae entering the building and asked twice, “Are you Bae Hyunjin of the People Power Party?” When Bae confirmed, Mr. A took out a stone from his pocket and hit her several times. Even after Bae fell and witnesses intervened, he continued the assault.
Hankyoreh reported that Mr. A, arrested on the scene on charges of violence and taken to the Gangnam Police Station, is 15 years old and is currently attending a middle school located near Sinsa-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul, where the incident occurred.
The media added that “the man had been lurking around the area from around 3 to 4 p.m.”
The CCTV footage released by Bae’s office captures the scene in detail. According to witnesses and the CCTV footage, Mr. A was seen wandering around the incident scene from around 4:36 p.m. that day.
Seoul Newspaper reported, “Before attacking Bae, he also exhibited strange behavior, such as talking to pedestrians passing by on the street.”
Based on these witness accounts and CCTV footage, the police are investigating whether Mr. A’s actions were part of a deliberate plan.
Immediately after the incident, Bae, bleeding, was transported to the Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital in Yongsan District, Seoul. She is currently hospitalized after emergency surgery, and medical staff are monitoring her progress.
